Why do you conclude Feldman’s and Cage’s works were a necessary response?

By using the term “necessary response” I was suggesting that composition had moved so far in one direction (i.e. serialization), that the natural response is the complete opposite. Polarization. Much like what we’re currently witnessing with US politics at the moment.

A musical example would be the reaction to JS Bach’s contrapuntal writing from that next generation of early Classical/post Baroque composers. A Bach fugue was considered “outdated” by many and a more simplified compositional style was the natural response. Of course that all changed again with Mr. Mozart…

As time goes by this album means more and more to me. It really speaks to me, it evokes in me the sort of peaceful revery that sleeping in on a weekend morning used to bring me in my thirties. . . .

Born 15 Sep 28.  Happy birthday up there.  Love this record.  Listening on the deck.  It’s unseasonably hot and sunny in Chicago.  The sun is very low in the sky now.  Always sad but enjoy what you have when you have it.  Plus Sazarec Rye is another gift.

amsco15, thanks for the comment below.  We survived Irma, but were without power for days and internet longer.  No real damage to the house, but our trees took a beating.  Luckily, none fell.  The biggest scare was the flooding.  It came within 8″ or 9″ of our house.  I was up at 4am dissembling all my gear and moving it to higher ground (onto couches, counters and tables).  I moved everything but the BHK250.  I told my wife that I would wait until the water started to come in before breaking my back.

I took pictures before the storm and after:

I hope all is well with everyone on the board who experienced Irma.

Elk & Xianharris

I have no idea what you are taliking about below. With that said, it’s a fascinating conversation.

If I understand it at all, it is the parallel of punk being the “necessary response” to Steely Dan, Chicago, ELO and the like, or AltCountry responding to the overly produced pop artists of today. Anyway, it is interesting to think of the same happening 100s of years ago. I had no idea.

My initial experience with classical music was my Dad playing WEBN Cincinnati, a hard rock station, on Sunday mornings. I can only assume WEBN switched programming as a hangover helper. I am not a musician, so I do not understand the intricacies, but I have always loved the music so again it’s a fascinating discussion.

One of the wonderful things about music is that almost everything has been done/tried hundreds of years ago, and yet there is so much which is new as well.  It does not seem possible people can be so endlessly creative.

Right now.  Awarded Record of the Year at the Gramophone awards 2017:

tabascocat1994, glad you narrowly escaped a much bigger problem.  I can’t imagine the heartache of having major water in the house.

Also, so glad your enjoying the Meschiya Lake CD!

Perfect music for a recovery Sunday.  Skeet shooting in the morning and the rest of the day at my sister’s pool yesterday: mellow and beautiful for now.

Hobby musician, music lover, long time audiophile, jazz-, vinyl-, and tube nut (but not dogmatic), now also CD/Hires/DSD nut. I use the Directstream DAC on Huron with Bridge II, a galvanic isolation device for LAN connection, a Monster High speed CAT6 LAN cable, a NAS drive QNAP TS253pro with 2 x 4GB WD red pro drives and Jriver for QNAP on the NAS with an *.aif/*.dsf library behind. I also use a power line separated from the rest of the house supply and from network components, a few active HF field protectors, a molecular reformatted complete signal chain as well as very sophisticated cabling throughout.
