Interesting new SHM-SACD from Universal Japan of Herbie Hancock’s “Speak Like a Child” Blue Note.

Very dynamic. . . but otherwise sounding a bit like an RVG mastering to me. (Which is not a terrible thing for me, I’m one of those few who have few problems with the RVG Editions). I have swapped out power tubes in my amp and am playing with my new Decware ZROCK2 so I don’t have the cleanest “slate” at the moment for evaluating sonic character.

My first attempt at using Tidal through the BridgeII in my DS Jr. It certainly doesn’t sound as good as spinning the physical disc, however, it’s awfully nice to have so many titles at my fingertips. Do most folks find the Tidal SQ to be a step down from spinning discs? I’ll try MQA soon but since I had this Dave Holland disc sitting in my transport, I thought I’d start here. Great disc by the way!

Jim Hall “Concierto” UHQCD from King Records of the RVG remastering of this CTI title.

Have to admit it sounds good. There’s tiny little bits of sound that come across “better” on these UHQCD discs that make it worth buying my favorite titles again. . . . I do enjoy listening to different releases of the same title. That’s just me.

This session by Lateef and Farmer has a ‘seventies funky oddness to it but I really dig it. Lateef really was such a capable writer and leader and I LOVE his sax playing.

This is the latest King Records cd release from Japan. Yusef Lateef “Autophysicpsychic” on CTI.

Same kind of sound and era as the Savoy CD, it’s more open and….smooth now with Redcloud.  The clarinet is just beautiful on Buddy Bolden Blues.  I’m a sucker for that song in it’s many forms: sounds great tonight.

I love it when my stereo jumps a notch.  It’s like a drug, you always want to kick it up higher.  Guess that’s why I’ve spent a fortune on this hobby.

P.S. worth every penny and more, keeps me sane….barely.

Deep funk.   Not a smart enough Jazz guy, but in “Aw Shucks” there a trumpet solo that just blows so clear…

Don’t know if I’ll ever decipher the lyrical code on this one, but the music swings!!  Deep, deep bass with funky horn riffs.

I need an HD version of this.  My recording is CD harsh.  But the groove is deep and in the crowd.  White crowds just don’t clap like that…so groovy.  Redcloud brings the harsh down a smidge!

A big well recorded modern CD.  Little compressed, like all modern recordings, but Redcloud pulls back a layer.  So far my favorite aspect.

I pick up a couple Christmas CDs every year.  Have a decent collection at this point.  I don’t play most after the year I buy them.  Some, however, stay in constant rotation (i.e. Phil Spector, ya it’s overplayed but a classic and what my daughters remember fondly).  This one will be around for years!

NOLA music!  Listen to “Peanut Vendor.”  All the light hearted Caribbean sounds of my favorite city.  Headed there just after the New Year!  Ahhhhh….

You want your stereo to funk it up?  If yes, try this box set.  Play the Meters, “Chug Chug Chug-A-Lug”  loud.  Redcloud can get down.

I’m on a George Jones tear at the moment.  He’s one of those guys that I love but don’t think I’d want to meet (yes, I know he’s gone).  Seemed like a jerk but maybe that’s too two dimensional of me.  I’d like to read a good biography.

I’ll admit, I had to look up the trumpet player on “Free For All:” Freddie Hubbard.  The horn is in the left channel and blows so beautiful with this low level, super funky piano track helping it all grounded.  Redcloud brings the whole thing down to it’s individual parts.  Fits my mood in my dark family room with big windows letting in more early evening winter darkness with very low level and widely diffuse artificial lighting…beautiful.

A lot of these songs have nothing to do with Joe Strummer or The Clash. They are Joe’s picks from Elvis to otherwise unknown (at least to me) foreign tracks. One of my favorite albums of all time.

My favorite single thing about The Beatles is that they covered and introduced me to songs like, “Anna.”  I still love The Beatles’ version but Arthur Alexander…..  How did The Beatles know about Arthur Alexander and Larry Williams?  They were plugged into my soul way before I knew it.
