Yes, see, e.g., here.  (The Roon rep – second post – refers to them as “pawmasher,” i.e., one word.)

Will the new server incorporate any special Ethernet isolation technology? Like fiber optic isolation built in?

Sorry if that has already been discussed.

The ethernet phy is already transformer coupled.

There is growing suspicion the Ethernet transformers are not immune to the high frequency noise of router smps supplies… hence why FMC isolation is somewhat popular.

I recently upgraded to an ultrarendu  and connected to my cable modem router and I got an extremely fatiguing sound out of my SGCD! Like ultrasonic something was there. Upon unplugging the coax from the router, noise went completely away. I previously couldn’t listen happily for more than 15 min and couldn’t turn up past 75 db. I’m using a BJC cat6a with a floated shield so the noise shouldn’t have travelled on the ground… it went straight thru the isolation transformer of the ultrarendu. I realize the coax probably introduced a ground loop… but if the transformer was 100%, this shouldn’t matter.

I recently implemented 2 TP link FMCs and the noise is completely gone. Also,  I can hear differences between the smps power supplies powering my receiving FMC that regenerates Ethernet from the optical.

@cxp

Which ūRendu coax is this?

A Cat.x cable is twisted pairs, not coax.

Speakers & XO: Soulsonic Impact LE w/HFC CT-1 speaker cables and SBP's. Subs: Rythmik F12SE on WW. Ribbon amp: Audio Music AM-805M MK2 Silver ed. w/NOS. Woofer amp: Audio-gd Master 1 & 10 on Doxa S-1. Preamp: Neutral Audio X-One on Audience and Chord Anthem. Transport: Rockna WD Net on Clarus Crimson. DAC: PSA DirectStream on LessLoss DFPC S and WW Platinum (I2s). Power: P10 on Powerbase on Wywires Gold Bybees. Auralic Aries on Telos Black + Synology NAS (SSD). JPlay USB w/AQ Jitterbug & UT Regen. Lumin A1 & L1w/LPS on VDH.

Coax (comcast) -> N600 modem router -> Ethernet to URendu (router to Urendu) via BlueJeans 6a

Its a combo Cable modem router. If ethernet isolation is perfect via transformer then it shouldn’t matter if you have a combo modem router, a switch, separate router, standard ethernet router… etc.

This was not a subtle effect, coax plugged in vs. unplugged. I’m talking cymbals in your face completely forward to a level where you can’t really hear the rest of the music vs. a nice natural soundstage and nice presentation where the speakers disappear.

Let me put it this way… I stopped listening to music for 1 week due to the sound until the FMC’s came in.

Yes that’s it the MC110. I use Corning fiber to connect them. Router and sending FMC are both powered on my common line in another power strip. Receiving FMC which sends Ethernet to Urendu has power supply on my Dectet in a separate zone from the SGCD.

Sounds like you’re onto something there mate! A linear PSU may help with the receiving FMC :-)

One more post I promise and I’ll shut up or move to another thread.

Testing out two power supplies on my receiving FMC I hear significant differences between iFi SPMS vs. Jameco Linear wall wart. The Jameco is much smoother with more natural body and natural sibilant character while iFi overemphasizes sibilance and kills the breath of the voice. Bass is much improved with Jameco, more musical full and complete.

I mention here since power supplies on an Ethernet device should not matter because of the isolation transformers. Many others are observing this not to be true, even on this forum there are a bunch of FMC users.

It would be awesome if the streamer either had built in optical isolation similar to how these FMC’s work or if they could have an optical fiber input.

+1 on the optical fiber input. My ideal configuration would have optical fiber input, thereby isolating the streamer from the switch, and I2S to connect to the DAC. I’m pretty sure the streamer will have I2S. I would also throw ethernet (direct connection to DAC, optimally) and USB connectivity for other DACs without I2S.

Music lover, amateur musician, physician, bulldog lover, and audiophile. PS Audio is integral in my system starting with P10 (with PSA AC12 cable) and includes a Directstream DAC, NuWave Phono converter, and LANRover. System also includes McIntosh MC205, Anthem AVM60, Mac Mini with Roon, B&W 804 D3 speakers, JL Audio Fathom subs, Fern & Roby Montrose turntable with Soundsmith Zephyr MIMC Star cartridge, and Gold Note PH-10 phono stage. Oh, and let's not forget about various and sundry ridiculously priced interconnects, USB, and power cables.

Should I add in another switch after the FMC before going to the Urendu? And then a high-end linear supply?

No but seriously… Yes this is a bit complicated. Especially since the LPS1 has an energizing supply (Meanwell). I am testing out an Sbooster linear power supply for the Urendu since it has great reviews, has been reported to have better dynamics, and would eliminate the 2 piece nature of the LPS1+meanwell. So in essence I have 2 FMC units added and subtract one piece maybe :)

Is there anyway the new server may include PCM to DSD conversion?… For those of us who have a SGCD or other DACS?

I just tried PCM->DSD 128 in Audirvana and it sounds amazing on the the SGCD  :)

Hi Paul

What is the order that the various versions will be released?

Are there two just the two versions planned for initial release?

1 Dedicated hardware box in DirectStream Chassis

2.  Bridge  3  card to plug into DS DSJr and PWD

thanks

Hi Paul.

This product couldn’t be better timed. Well, it could be if it was available now!

I’ve just purchased a DirectStream which I’m collecting this Saturday. I was researching my the best way to get my music files served to it when I found this review:

http://www.hifi-advice.com/blo…..ry-player/

It seems to this reviewer that the combination of the memory player into the DSD is one of the best digital sources he’s heard. It got me thinking I wanted the best for my new DSD as well but I don’t want a third party server or the faff of setting up a computer based source. The PS Audio Server with Octave looks to be to be the answer.

Further research led me to this forum and this subject. I have read through all the pages with great interest and appreciate your passion to provide top quality products.

In the past my front end was a Naim unitiServe SSD and ND5XS streamer. Files were stored on my Synology NAS via the unitiServe when I ripped my CD’s. Naim prefers WAV as a format and for my own reasons as do I. The only problem is metadata. I planned to use my Mac mini and JRiver to play my music into my DSD. The interface will be my iPad with JRivers app. The problem with this is I can only search files by album and not artist because of the WAV files. My naim streamer allowed me to search by directory/folder. A basic way to navigate which worked fine for me back then.

A few questions:

1) Will the new server have a search by folder option or will the file location and how it’s accessed be based on metadata only?

2) As the DirectStream converts the files to DSD, is it no longer important (to some), whether their files are FLAC or WAV? What format will the PS Audio server rip CD’s into?

3) Once a CD was ripped using my unitiServe, I was able to access the file via The nServe app on my iPad and make changes to the Artist Name, Album Title (I like to add record label and cat. No’s) and Track Titles. Could this feature be included in the Octave control app for iPad? It would be slicker to have this rather than having to fire up the computer and make tag changes that way!

Many thanks & best regards

Noticed that a prototype P20 is going to be on display at the Rocky Mountain Audio Show.

Wondered if a prototype of the music server is going to be on display as well?

Just a thought.

You will be able to search by metadata. So, search by artist, genre, composer, track title, etc.

The server will RIP files into what file type you choose. We’re not yet ready to tackle that part of the server, but when we do, we’ll have some good choices you’ll appreciate. Need to focus on one area at a time. Presently we’re focused on navigation and getting everything to work.

You will have complete control over the metadata tagging through the Octave app.

Sorry, sir! Missed that one. Yes, the first product to launch will be the top dog server in the PerfectWave chassis. We try and always start at the top and work our way down. I hope that the very next product will be the Bridge III version but cannot promise that. It’s just what I am expecting.

Hi Paul

I hope you’re making good progress the the server development.

I have thought of another feature that my naim unitServe had which I found useful. Ripped CD’s and other stored files could be copied and sent as mp3’s to a chosen location. This was useful as I saved them into my iTunes folder which then enabled me to load my music onto my ‘i’ device for portable music.

As I added more music, you simply ran the operation again and the iTunes directory would be updated.

Just an idea.

Regards

That is a neat idea, for sure. Thanks.

The server will not itself be able to RIP SACD but you can store anything you want on the device if you can figure out how to rip them.
