No worries – I don’t doubt it for a minute. (And it’s not like I never give you shit!). With Huron, it wasn’t so much that it didn’t sound good right away, more that I kept saying to myself, “WHAT is it that is going on here?”  Couldn’t figure it out.  Then I stopped worrying about it : )

And BTW, if any of you have not had your ears cleaned, I would heartily recommend it.  Once I was doing lots of mixing, and was having a balance issue “with the monitors”.  Went to the ENT guy and he pulled a big plug out of one ear.  Sometimes it slowly builds up over time, so you don’t notice.  And some GPs think if there is ANY clearance at all, it’s not worth cleaning out (you’re supposed to have SOME).   And sometimes physical removal is far more effective than the home methods – but it depends how bad it is.

P3, DirectStream Memory Player via I2S (AQ Carbon) or Bill Ernst-modded Mac Mini running Roon via galvanically isolated USB chain (or ethernet to Bridge II) to DS Junior, Transparent Ultra XLRs, DEQX HDP-4, Transparent Ultra XLRs, Hypex nCore 400-based amp, Harbeth SHL5+ or Quad 988's with JLAudio f112 subs.  Analog:  VPI Scout, JMW 9 arm, Soundsmith Zephyr MIMC, VTL TL 2.5 Phono analog to DEQX, or PS Audio Phono Converter, I2S to DS Jr.  Surround: ARCAM AVR 600, Oppo 105, ACI Sapphire XLs, JL Audio subs.

I have a bad case if exostosis in my left ear (due to a lifetime of competitive and marathon swimming) and will, at the age of 64, be getting it surgically corrected in the next few weeks.  I have to say…my love of listening to music through my DSJ was definitely a factor in my decision to finally do this.

Good news and bad news. Redcloud will launch as planned at noon tomorrow for DirectStream. We’re having trouble with DSJ loads and have to postpone for another day or so to get the problem fixed. Apologies.

I understand that most versions of Redcloud beats Huron every day of the week and twice on Sundays, however was the process of selection (shortlisting from 20 specimen) the same as before and was the winner unanimously decided within the listening group?

Speakers & XO: Soulsonic Impact LE w/HFC CT-1 speaker cables and SBP's. Subs: Rythmik F12SE on WW. Ribbon amp: Audio Music AM-805M MK2 Silver ed. w/NOS. Woofer amp: Audio-gd Master 1 & 10 on Doxa S-1. Preamp: Neutral Audio X-One on Audience and Chord Anthem. Transport: Rockna WD Net on Clarus Crimson. DAC: PSA DirectStream on LessLoss DFPC S and WW Platinum (I2s). Power: P10 on Powerbase on Wywires Gold Bybees. Auralic Aries on Telos Black + Synology NAS (SSD). JPlay USB w/AQ Jitterbug & UT Regen. Lumin A1 & L1w/LPS on VDH.

Paul, if the new Bridgell code is also released tomorrow, I presume you will outline the features so we can decide whether or not to download it as well as RedCloud.

I don’t understand why one wouldn’t update to the latest whether they use all the features or not.

I’ve been listening to Huron today …and yesterday. It sounds pretty remarkable. I have the San Fran Mahler symph 3 Paul used to test redcloud. I also have many of the Chopin pieces by carmignola. Trying to find how I could get improvement. :). Anything I should listen to in particular Paul ?  Sorry I like a/b like Darren. :)

Perhaps I should have said “to download right away”. Paul has already noted that they are independent.

F#*k me! I took the day in order to do a listening session in the morning with Huron before Redcloud came out. Then I would spend the rest of the day/evening with Redcloud. I have a DSJ. Like I said, f#*k me. Yes, this is what I take days off for. Audiophile? More like audionut.

Oh well, since the Bridge II update is independent of Redcloud, you can still update the former and have a play with the new features – MQA decoding from Roon etc.

Mac Mini/Uptone Audio JS-2 & MMK > iFi iUSB3 or LAN > DSJ Bal out > Bryston BP-26 > Benchmark AHB2 > Harbeth M30.1/Rel S3 (DSJ unbal out > Bryston BHA-1)

Slow down Sevilla. Paul did warn that the ‘the creek might rise’… and I think that redcloud is still a pretty fast successor of huron, which i thought would be the final one. I really like the openess and style of Paul and the audio soul he expresses. Only a few days later is excellent, expecially in sw! In Europe we laugh about people bragging to build walls without delivering, thankfully. Yesterday, i had some unexpected time off and spent it scrolling through the dark unvisited corners of my music library. Fun. Also, revisited Carmignola’s Vivaldi, excellent. He did not perform any Chopin though Timm… that was more a piano kind of composer..

I’m counting out time. Got the whole thing down by numbers. All those numbers! Give me guidance! Oh Lord I need that now. The day of judgement’s comes. And you can bet that I’ve been resting, for this testing. Digesting every word the expert Ted says!

The new Bridge code is now live. There are a couple of minor bug fixes but the main features are:

  • Updated ROON RAAT to the latest version
  • Spotify Connect
  • VTuner access (through the MConnect app)
  • Qobuz, a paid service like Tidal (through the MConnect app)

I think that’s all there is. It’s early and I am only on my first cup of coffee.

Yes, so sorry about DSJ. Though I did just get a note from Matt that he figured out how to load the code so there’s still a chance today….but no promises.

Update for bridge sw went smoothly, use rear on/out button to start. Qobuz through mconnect works for streaming my purchases. No substriction yet to test. Because of this my hirez purchases only streams 16/44. Hirez streaming still works of course through nas. Surprised to see the same old display build-up. I hoped to see a lot of clutter removed there to see a larger album art. Missed opportunity! I would say, only show incoming format like dsd64 and an info buttom next to the album art. That’s all…. Time and volume, i see better on my ipad.. Also, the ‘bug’ that for every number the album art is loaded again after a few seconds is still there.

Updated Bridge smoothly.

Spotify connect however does not work in my case. The app does see the Bridge now (great), but says “premium users only”… :-(

Where can one find the downloads?

My system is comprised of an Ayre AX-5 Twenty Integrated with a PS Audio DirectStream DAC and a DirectStream Memory Player along with Roon and a Sonos system.  I also have a Schiit Audio Jotunheim  headphone amp with Focal Elear headphones.  My speakers are the Kharma CRM 3.2-FE and it's all connected with Audience balanced interconnects and speaker cables and Audience power cables.  Everything is powered from a PS Audio P10 AC power regenerator.

Cycle the power on your DS and then it will show up so you can download it via your Network.  This is for the Bridge II update.

My Bridge II upgrade also went smoothly but here is a hint that may help some of you if you do a lot of Roon streaming. If you see on the display that there is no firmware upgrade available – try a hard power reset of the PSD. This worked for me.

When I first went into the Bridge setup screen it showed no firmware available but the version screen showed I was running 3.3.3. The one thing I noticed is that the main display was showing the last song that I had streamed to the DSD several days ago. I suspected that maybe Roon had the network connection tied up somehow and was not letting the Bridge check for new firmware. I tried getting rid of the stream via the Roon client and even rebooting my Roon server but the Roon stream remained on the main DSD display. So I finally did a hard reset of the DSD which cleared the Roon connection, went into the Bridge configuration panel and the new firmware showed as available. After that, the upgrade went without a hitch.
